| biography:
| Playwright and poet, born in Laxamýri, N Iceland. He studied veterinary science in Copenhagen before turning to literature, writing simultaneously in Danish and Icelandic in order to gain a wider audience. He used Icelandic folk-tale motifs for his major play, Fjalla-Eyvindur (1911, Eyvind of the Mountains), which took Copenhagen by storm, was produced in England and the USA, and made into a film. The first Icelandic writer in modern times to achieve international recognition, his other plays include Dr Rung (1908), Bonden á Hrauni (1908, The Farmer at Hraun), and Logneren (1917, The Liar). |
