| biography:
| German statesman, born in Wesel, W Germany. He became a member of the National Socialist Party in 1932 and, as Hitler's adviser in foreign affairs, was responsible for the Anglo-German naval pact (1935). He became ambassador to Britain (1936) and foreign minister (1938–45). Captured by the British in 1945, he was condemned and executed at Nuremberg. |
