| biography:
| Mystic, born in Calabria, S Italy. In 1177 he became abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Corazzo, and later founded a stricter Order, the Ordo Florensis, which was absorbed by the Cistercians in 1505. He is known for his mystical interpretation of history, recognizing three ages of increasing spirituality: the Age of the Father (the Old Testament), the Age of the Son (the New Testament and the period to 1260), and the Age of the Spirit, a period of perfect liberty, which would emerge thereafter. |
