| biography:
| Painter, probably born in Bouvignes, S Belgium. Little is known of his early life, although it has been suggested that he studied under Hieronymus Bosch. In 1515 he is recorded as a member of the Antwerp painters' guild. He was arguably the first Western artist to paint scenes in which the natural world, while not the whole subject of the painting, clearly dominates the religious narrative. |
