| French marshal and king of Naples (1808–15), born in La Bastide-Fortunière, SC France. He enlisted in the cavalry on the eve of the French Revolution (1787), and was promoted to general of division in the Egyptian campaign (1799). He married Napoleon's sister, Caroline, after helping him become First Consul. He failed to gain the Spanish crown (1808), and was proclaimed King of the Two Sicilies. After taking part in the Russian campaign, he won Dresden and fought at Leipzig, but concluded a treaty with the Austrians, hoping to save his kingdom. On Napoleon's return from Elba, he recommenced war against Austria, but was twice defeated, and failed to recover Naples. He was captured and executed at Pizzo, Calabria. |
