| biography:
| Dutch naval officer, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He fought against the Dunkirk privateers, was captured by the Spanish and sent to the galleys, but escaped with important intelligence on the Armada. In 1596 he was a captain with the Amsterdam Admirality, became vice-admiral (1603–5) under Paulus van Caerden on an expedition to the West Indies and Brazil, and admiral in 1621. After his retirement at his own request he commanded a large convoy to the Mediterranean and fought the Spanish fleet off Gibraltar. His wife, Lysbeth Bas, kept the Prince of Orange tavern in Amsterdam, a favourite watering place of the prominent men of the time. |
