| biography:
| Dutch lawyer, born in Groningen, N Netherlands. The son of an orthodox Protestant family, he converted to Catholicism in 1806 and became an activist for Roman Catholic emancipation. He practised law in Rotterdam and Loosduinen. In 1815 he caused a stir with a pamphlet on the excellence of the Roman Catholic doctrine De voortreffelijkheid van de leer der Roomsch-Katholieke Kerk. He started a number of periodicals including De Godsdienstvriend (1818–68), De Ultramontaan (1826, later to become De Morgenster der Toekomst), and the Rooms-Catholijke Courant. An institution he founded to promote confessional literature was banned by Royal Decree. In 1827 he was briefly imprisoned for his opposition to William I's policies. |
