| biography:
| Athlete, born in Wichita, Kansas, USA. In 1966, while still in his teens, he set a world record time of 3 min 51·3 s for the mile. The following year he established a world record in the 1500 m, clocking 3 min 33·1 s. Never as successful in top-class competition as he was against the clock, he failed to take the gold medal at the Olympic Games of 1964, 1968, and 1972. He turned professional shortly after the 1972 Games. |
