| Stage names of Jimmy Jewel (1909–95) and Ben Warriss (1909–93) Comedy partners, born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, N England, UK. They were cousins, both of them children of popular entertainers. Warriss made his professional debut at Stockport when he was 10, and went on to play revues and pantomimes. He joined up with Jewel as a double act in Newcastle in 1934, and they quickly achieved success, becoming favourites in pantomimes, and achieving national fame as stars on BBC radio's Up the Pole (1947) and as cover stars of the weekly children's comic, Radio Fun. They appeared frequently on television in the 1950s, including four Royal Variety performances. They separated in 1966, Jewel continuing with comedy acting, Warriss making occasional theatrical and television appearances. |
