| One of the 12 apostles in the New Testament. He was a tax gatherer before becoming a disciple of Jesus, and is identified with Levi (in Mark 2.14 and Luke 5.27). According to tradition he was the author of the first Gospel, a missionary to the Hebrews in Judaea, Ethiopia, and Persia, and suffered martyrdom, but nothing is known with certainty about his life. Feast day 22 July. |
