biography
name: Luke, St

sex: male
lived: (1st-c)

biography: New Testament evangelist, a Gentile Christian, perhaps ‘the beloved physician’ and companion of St Paul (Col 4.14, Phil 24), but this is disputed. Church tradition made him a native of Antioch in Syria, and a martyr. He is first named as author of the third Gospel in the 2nd-c, and tradition has ever since ascribed to him both that work and the Acts of the Apostles. Feast day 18 October.
