biography: Conductor, born in Toro, Zamora, NWC Spain. He studied at Madrid University as well as the Conservatories in Malaga and Madrid, the Vienna Academy, and the Juilliard School of Music, New York. He was musical director of the Berlin Opera (1981–90), director of the National Orchestra of Spain (1984–9), musical director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1986–93), and since 1990 has been director of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. He was awarded the Principe de Asturias Prize for the Arts in 1981.
