| Stage and film actor, born in London, Ontario. He studied law at McGill University, and while still a student gained some success as an actor in Montreal. In 1934 he went to New York and soon earned a reputation as a character actor, first on the stage and then in films (from 1943). Over the years he often teamed with his wife (married 1942) Jessica Tandy. He also wrote film and stage adaptations and directed for the theatre. |
