| Librarian and educator, born in Oxford, Ohio, USA. He studied at Columbia University (1944 PhD), and went on to hold successive positions in government and academia. After several years at the University of Chicago Library, he became dean of the Western Reserve University School of Library Science (1952–82) where he established the doctoral programme in librarianship and edited the university press. Despite a severe visual handicap, he was a prolific writer and a pioneer in the field of information retrieval. |
