| Colonist and cattleman, born in Kentucky, USA. He went to Oregon (1843) and opened the southern road to that area in 1845. He raised beef cattle in the Umpqua valley and wrote the Western classic A Day with the Cow Column in 1843 (1876). He was an influential supporter of President Abraham Lincoln and the Union. |
