| biography:
| Ghanaian leader (1979, 1981–2001) and president (1992–2001), born in Accra, Ghana. He was at the centre of a coup in 1979, returning power to a civilian government a few months later. Despite being forcibly retired from the armed forces and discredited by the government he helped install, his popularity remained high, and he returned with his Armed Forces Revolutionary Council to seize power again at the end of 1981. Under pressure from aid donors to institute democratic reforms, in 1992 he announced a return to multi-party elections and was elected as president. |
