| biography:
| First king of the divided kingdom of Israel. Solomon made him superintendent of the labours and taxes exacted from his tribe of Ephraim at the construction of the fortifications of Zion. The growing disaffection towards Solomon fostered his ambition, but he was obliged to flee to Egypt. After Solomon's death he headed the successful revolt of the N tribes against Rehoboam, and, as their king, established shrines at Dan and Bethel as rival pilgrimage centres to Jerusalem. He reigned for 22 years. |
