| Television presenter and journalist born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, then joined BBC 1 as presenter on Tonight (1977–9), Panorama (1979–84), the Six O'Clock News (1985–6), and Breakfast Time (1986–9). Programmes on BBC 2 include Newsnight (1989– ), on which he developed a reputation as a tough but fair interviewer, Did You See? (1991–3), and University Challenge (1994– ). He presented BBC Radio 4's Start the Week (1998–2002). He received the BAFTA Richard Dimbleby Award in 1996. A regular contributor to newspapers and magazines, his books include Fish, Fishing and the Meaning of Life (1994) and The English: A Portrait of A People (1999). |
