| biography:
| Organist, composer, and poet, born in Saint-Omer, when still under Spanish domination. In 1604 he became a naturalized French citizen; his name shows his Toulousian family origins. His improvizations from l'Artois earned him nomination to the cathedral at Rouen, where he was canon in 1610. His ‘Magnificat’ (Cantique de la vierge) in 1626 was made up of eight cycles of verses for each tonality. Much of his output has been lost, but extant are polyphonic religious works, and hymns and fugues in the austere spirit of motets. As a poet, he was nicknamed Prince de Palinods. |
