| Boxer, born in Carroll, Ohio, USA. He received his nickname because he worked in a boiler factory. He trained as sparring partner to ‘Gentleman’ Jim Corbett, and in 1899 won the world heavyweight championship by knocking out Bob Fitzsimmons in 11 rounds. He retired undefeated in 1905, but in 1910 was persuaded to return to the ring as the ‘great white hope’ against the new black champion, Jack Johnson, who knocked him out in the 15th round. |
