| biography:
| Engraver, painter, and designer, born in Saint-Mihiel, NE France. A student of Le Brun, he was appointed designer to King Louis XIV (1674) and also organized court celebrations, designing stage scenery, costumes, fêtes, and displays. His designs for interiors, furniture, and public events inspired decorators and designers throughout Europe. His arabesques, grotesques, and singeries (monkey designs), often combined with Chinese motifs, initiated the fashion for chinoiserie in the mid 18th-c, and had an influence on later Rococo artists. He also designed Molière's stage décor. |
