| Novelist, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK and adopted into a Pentecostal family as an infant. Her first novel, the autobiographical Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1987), won the Whitbread Prize. Later books include The Passion (1987), Sexing The Cherry (1989), Gut Symmetries (1997), and The Powerbook (2000). A collection of stories, World and Other Places, appeared in 1999. |
