| biography:
| Poet, born in France - his surname derives from a village near Orléans. He wrote, before 1260, the first part (c.4000 lines) of the encyclopedic Roman de la Rose - an allegory presenting love as a garden, the lady as a rose, and the knight as in quest of her favour. The work was widely influential in mediaeval Europe, and was continued a few decades later by Jean de Meung. |
