| Writer, born in Paris, France. His only well-known work, Caractères, (1688, Characters), consists of two parts: a translation of Theophrastus, and a masterpiece of French literature in the form of a collection of maxims, reflections, and character portraits of the time. He was chosen to aid Jacques Bossuet in educating the dauphin, and also became tutor to the Duc de Bourbon, grandson of the great Condé. |
