| biography:
| Theologian and mystic, born in Gerson, NE France. He was educated in Paris. As Chancellor of the University of Paris from 1395, he supported the proposal for putting an end to the Great Schism between Rome and Avignon by the resignation of both the contending pontiffs, and participated in the Councils of Pisa (1409) and Constance (1414). His fortunes were marred by the animosity of the Duke of Burgundy after denouncing the murder of the Duke of Orléans. Gerson prudently retired to Germany, returning to France only after the duke's death in 1419. |
