| biography:
| French-language poet, born in Beni Saf, NW Algeria. His early poetry, such as Poèmes, is very personal, but from the outbreak of the Algerian War of Independence in 1954 it reflected the national struggle, as in Le Soleil sous les armes (1957). He worked in the Algerian Ministry of National Education (1962) and served as secretary-general of the Union of Algerian Writers (1963–6). He edited the Anthologie de la nouvelle poésie algérienne (1971). A popular poet, he was assassinated in mysterious circumstances in Algiers. |
