| biography:
| Civil engineer, born in Suresnes, NC France. After training as an architect and working as a civil engineer in French government service, he was appointed in 1747 the first director of the newly–created Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées. He built a number of outstanding masonry arch bridges, including the Pont de Neuilly and the Pont de la Concorde in Paris, setting new standards of aesthetic and engineering design. |
