| French painter who ran an important workshop in Paris from the 1320s onwards, specializing in illuminated manuscripts. The ‘Belleville Breviary’ (Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris) and the ‘Hours of Jeanne d'Evreux’ (Metropolitan Museum, New York City) are among the greatest masterpieces of early French painting, fusing Italian Renaissance with traditional French elements. |
