| biography:
| Haitian politician, mulatto-born in Port-au-Prince. Sent early to France, in 1792 he entered the army. He distinguished himself against the British during their invasion of Haiti, and established an independent republic in the W part of the island. After the death of Christophe, he united the negro district with the mulatto in 1820. He governed Haiti well for 15 years, but his partiality towards the mulattos made the pure negroes rise in 1843. He fled, and died in Paris. |
