| biography:
| French poet, born in Athens, Greece. He spent his childhood in Marseille, then travelled in Europe before settling in Paris in 1882. His first collection, Les Syrtes (1884), placed him among the ‘décadents’, but he then moved towards Symbolism and in 1886 founded the periodical Le Symbolist. In the preface to Le Pélerin Passionné (1891) he began to forsake Symbolism, and called for a return to the spirit of classicism. He founded the ‘ecole romaine’ with Charles Maurras, reverting to classical form and subject matter. Works from this period include Enone au clair visage (1893) and Eriphyle (1894). His last work was Les Stances (6 vols, 1899–1920). |
