| biography:
| Industrial scientist, born in Thizy, SC France. He became inspector of manufacturing in Amiens (1780), married Marie Jeanne Phlipon in 1780, and moved to Lyon, where he wrote on manufacturing and economics. In 1791 they went to Paris, and through the influence of his wife he became minister of the interior (1792), but was dismissed three months later by Louis XVI after a disagreement about the national guard. He was re-instated after the monarchy was overthrown, but as a Girondist fell foul of Robespierre. He escaped from Paris, but his wife was arrested and guillotined, and he committed suicide. |
