| biography:
| French soldier, born in Mouilleron-en-Pareds, France. He studied at the Jesuit College at Poitiers and at St Cyr, commanded an infantry battalion during World War 1, and was decorated with the Croix de Guerre. In World War 2 he commanded the 14th division against the advancing Germans (1940), then served in Tunisia. As commander of the French 1st Army, he took part in the Allied liberation of France (1944–5), signing the German surrender. He was responsible for the reorganization of the French army, and was appointed commander-in-chief of Western Union Land Forces under Montgomery in 1948, and in 1950 in French Indo-China. He was posthumously made a marshal of France in 1952. |
