| biography:
| Painter and tapestry designer, born in Bruyères, E France. From 1912 he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Colarossi. A Cubist and friend of Picasso, he abandoned painting in 1914 after being wounded in action, and took up tapestry design in 1917. As a designer for Aubusson (1937) and the Gobelins (1939), he revived the art of tapestry in France. Inspired by 14th-c French tapestries, his work was commissioned by the French government and by various French cities. His best-known works include ‘Hommage aux morts de la Résistance et de la Déportation’ (1956), ‘Le Chant du Monde’ (1957), ‘La Flamme et l'Océan’ (1962) and ‘Tout feu Tout flamme’ (1963). |
