| biography:
| French politican and naval officer, born in Nérac, SW France. He passed through the Ecole Navale in 1899, attaining flag rank in 1929. He became in turn minister of the navy and mercantile marine, vice-president of the Council of Ministers, and secretary of state for foreign affairs and the navy. During the Vichy regime he was admiral of the fleet, vice-premier, foreign minister, and minister for national defence. He was assassinated in Algiers, after he had concluded an armistice with the Allies, by an anti-Vichy agent. |
