| biography:
| Inventor and engineer, born in Mussy-la-Ville, SE Belgium. By converting a steam engine to burn a mixture of coal-gas and air, and successfully marketing it, he became the inventor of the first practical internal combustion engine (c.1859). He later adapted it to run on liquid fuel, and used it to propel a vehicle he built (1860). He also constructed a boat driven by his engine (1886). |
