biography: Ecclesiastic, born in Paris, France. Encouraged by St François de Sales to become a priest, he studied with the Jesuits (1617–25) and was ordained in 1633. He became the curé parish priest of St Sulpice in Paris (1642–55), where he effected social and educational reforms which were continued by St Jean-Baptiste de la Salle. He founded the Sulpician order and the seminary of Saint-Sulpice, and was an influence on St Vincent de Paul.
