| biography:
| Cabinet-maker, born in Gladbeck, W Germany. In 1754, he joined the workshop of Jean François Oeben (c.1715–63) in Paris, taking charge on Oeben's death. A master of marquetry and ebony work, he became the best known cabinet-maker in France. He completed the famous ‘king's desk’ for Louis XV, and was favoured by the court of Louis XVI from 1774. |
