| Painter, born in Couterne, Orne, NW France. He studied architecture and engineering in Lille and went to Paris. Influenced by Cubism, in 1930–8 he was a leading French abstract painter, but after World War 2 returned to naturalism in his paintings. His works include À Rebours (1947, Musée nationale d'art moderne, Paris). |
