| biography:
| Actor, born in Paris, France. He started his stage career as a music hall singer and dancer, and played light juvenile leads in films from 1930, but a series of dramatic roles brought him greater depth and international recognition, especially in Pépé le moko (1936), Quai des brumes (1938, trans Port of Shadows) and Le Jour se lève (1939, trans Daybreak). After World War 2 he continued to appear frequently in tough character roles until shortly before his death. |
