| biography:
| Founder of Egyptology, born in Figeac, SC France. He studied at Grenoble, and went to Paris (1807), subsequently becoming professor of history at Grenoble (1809–16). Best known for his use of the Rosetta Stone to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics (1822–4), he was the first to place the study of early Egyptian history and culture on a firm footing. In 1831 a chair of Egyptology was founded for him at the Collège de France. |
