| biography:
| Painter, born in Gruchy, France. He farmed with his peasant father before being placed with a painter at Cherbourg. In 1837 he worked under Delaroche in Paris, achieving recognition at the Salon in 1844. Later he settled in Barbizon, painting the rustic life of France with sympathetic power. His famous ‘Sower’ was completed in 1850. His ‘Peasants Grafting’ (1855) was followed by ‘The Gleaners’ (1857), and other masterpieces. He also produced charcoal drawings of high quality, and etched a few plates. He received little public notice, but after the Great Exhibition in Paris (1867) he was awarded the Légion d'honneur. |
