| biography:
| French actor and director, born in Algeria. One of the most prominent male stars of the nouvelle vague in French cinema, he seemed to embody the cynicism and alienation of French adolescents of that era in films such as Le Beau Serge and Les Cousins (1959, director C Chabrol). His many later films tended to be commercial rather than artistic successes. |
