| Poet and novelist, born in Braun, SE France. He published his poems, Le Fort interieur (1948), then collaborated on the Temps Modernes (1949–54), became secretary to Jean-Paul Sartre, wrote Croquis de Mémoire (1985), and published novels and short stories. His La Pitié de Dieu gained the Prix Goncourt in 1961. Other works include Une Nuit à Saint-Germain-des-Près (1977), an essay against liberalism Le Discours de la Décadence (1978), and an adaptation of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. He was also a journalist on L'Express and Le Figaro Littéraire. |
