| biography:
| Composer, born in Florence, NC Italy. He came as a boy to Paris, and after much ambitious intriguing was made operatic director by Louis XIV in 1672. With Philippe Quinault (1635–88) as librettist, he composed many operas in which he made the ballet an essential part, including Phaéton, Isis, and Acis et Galatée. He also wrote church music, dance music, and pastorals. He died of blood poisoning after striking his foot with his conducting stick. |
