| biography:
| Genre and portrait painter, born in Tournus, EC France. A significant and popular mid-18th-c painter, his work was praised by Diderot as ‘morality in paint’, his subjects being the working-class, peasants, and lower bourgeoisie. His first notable works were historical, and after a visit to Italy (1755) he painted Italian subjects; but he is seen at his best in such studies of girls as ‘The Broken Pitcher’ (c.1773, Louvre) and ‘Girl with Doves’ (Wallace Collection, London). His first great success was ‘L'Accordée de Village’ (1761, Louvre) and he painted some excellent portraits and charming studies of children. With the advent of Neoclassicism his work lost popularity and he died in poverty. |
