| Explorer, born in Neuilly, NC France, the son of Jean Martin Charcot. A doctor, he commanded two Antarctic expeditions in the Français (1903–5) and Pourquoi Pas? (1908–1910), and after World War 1 carried out hydrographic surveys off Greenland. He later went down with the Pourquoi Pas? off Iceland. |
