| biography:
| French revolutionary, born in Yolet, SC France. In the National Convention he helped to form the Revolutionary Tribunal, voted for the death of the king, and assisted in the overthrow of the Girondists. At Nantes in 1793 he massacred in four months 16 000 Vendéan and other prisoners, chiefly by drowning them in the R Loire (the noyades, ‘drownings’). After the fall of Robespierre he was tried and guillotined. |
