| biography:
| Landscape painter, born in Paris, France. He studied at Rouen, took up art in 1822, and after visiting Italy, settled in Paris (1827). His main sketching ground was at Barbizon, in the Forest of Fontainebleau; but he made two other visits to Italy in 1835 and 1843. Several of his masterpieces, such as ‘La Danse des nymphes’ (1850) are in the Louvre. |
