| Organic chemist, born in Alais, S France. He studied at Geneva, then went to Paris (1821), where he lectured at the Ecole Polytechnique. By propounding new ideas on the theories of relations between organic compounds, he laid the foundations for Kekulé's later work. He later became professor of chemistry at the Athenée, the Ecole Centrale (which he founded), and the Sorbonne. In 1848 he moved into politics, becoming Master of the Mint in 1868. |
