| biography:
| Physician, born in Vosges, NE France. He studied medicine in Strasbourg and Paris, where he received his MD in 1853. He practised medicine in Paris, and in his spare time carried out research in his private laboratory. He discovered that tuberculosis is a contagious disease (1865), but his results were ignored at the time. He also discovered that certain bacteria could attack other bacteria, for which he created the term antibiotic. |
